Today we will read the final scene of Act 3 together. Near the end (lines 198-227), you will be asked to summarize an exchange between Juliet, her mother, and the nurse. Do your best here! This will help me to see how well we are reading the text.

Today we will start with 20-25 minutes of silent reading. Remember to record your page number at the start of the hour!
Next you'll spend the rest of the hour working on your second character analysis assignment. Divide a blank sheet of paper into 4 equal spaces (like we did after Act 1). Write the name of your assigned character in the middle of the page. Below are the assignments for each row: Row 1: Mercutio Row 2: Tybalt Row 3: Friar Row 4: Nurse Row 5: Juliet Row 6: Romeo You'll need to fill each quadrant with one of the items listed below. Please read directions carefully!
This assignment is due tomorrow and will count as a small quiz grade. Please take your time and follow all directions carefully. If you finish early, you may read a bit more. Today we will start in small discussion groups again. First, we'll review yesterday's scene. Then, you may move on to answering the discussion questions below. Please record your answers and be prepared to share with the class.
To start the hour today, you may choose to work on your own or with a partner to finish reading Act 3, Scene 1 (we left off at the top of p. 792). On a separate sheet of lined paper, answer the following questions as you read:
We will be using a modernized film version of Romeo and Juliet to discuss various elements of the play. Keep your notes! You will use these later in the unit.
Today we'll finish Act 2 together. Then we'll have some small group conversations about the play thus far:
Today we will begin with silent reading. Mark your starting page number on your calendar.
Then we will turn our attention back to the play. I will collect your figurative language handouts/illustrations. We'll also add some examples to our flash card folio terms. Finally, we will watch scene 4 on film and summarize for our chart. Today we'll begin with a little close reading practice. You will read Act 2, Scene 3 on your own and answer the following questions in bullet points on your summary chart:
When you are finished, you may move on to our next task--writing our own figurative language to modernize the cheesy scene in 2.2. Use the handout to guide you. Once you finish the handout, you'll complete one final task. Create a SMALL (notecard size) illustration of just ONE of the similes or metaphors you wrote. The illustration should show the literal interpretation of your words (for the example, I'd have to depict Juliet as a Tommy Turtle Sundae, or I could show Romeo in a long line at Captain Sundae). Make sure your simile or metaphor is also written on your picture. This is going to be a bit of a contest with some prizes, so bring your A game!!! Your illustration is due at the start of the hour tomorrow. If you finish early, you may read. We will start the hour with our silent reading. Please be sure to fill in your starting page number today.
As we shift our attention to Romeo and Juliet, I'll collect any remaining character assignments that are still out there from last week. Then we'll begin reading Act 2, Scene 2 together. Summarize in your notes as we go. When we finish, you'll have time to start the figurative language handout (finish for tomorrow). Today we'll begin with our Romeo and Juliet quiz over Act 1. When you finish, please turn it in to the wire bin. Then take out your lit. book and open to Act 2, Prologue and Scene 1. Using the handout provided to guide you, read this short scene and answer the 5 questions in the right column. Be sure to summarize the action on the Act 2 page of your packet too. You are doing this reading on your own to see how well you can understand it.
When you finish this work, please read your choice book for the rest of the hour. Don't forget to fill in your calendar with your starting page! |
