Today we will continue viewing Moana and comparing/contrasting it to what we now know about the Hero's Journey archetype. Continue taking notes as you see Moana (our epic hero) encounter the 12 basic elements of the Hero's Journey.

Today we'll begin with Status of the Class and 15 minutes of SSR/conferencing.
Next we will begin our discussion of the Hero's Journey. We'll start with a google search of the term to see the images associated with it. Then we'll discuss its basic elements before we start watching Moana (an example of this archetype). This movie will help us to study the archetype inspired by The Odyssey. You'll need to take notes so that you can compare the movie to Homer's story in the coming weeks. Before you turn in your narrative final draft today, you'll need to add the following to your hard copy:
Next we'll move on to lesson 3 of our grammar unit. With the time we have left at the end of the hour, we will fit in our SSR. Today in our Narrative Anchor work, we'll do some final editing. This will include a brief "spot check" of a section of dialogue. Please check with at least two neighbors first!
As you complete your final revisions, please refer to the rubric and MLA sample posted yesterday. At the end of this hour, your story should be finalized! Please find a time to print a hard copy before class starts tomorrow. When you finish, you may read your SSR book. Today we will begin with 15 minutes of SSR and conferencing. We'll get back to work on the narrative by reviewing the rubric for the short story. Then we will finish working through the RADaR revisions. After completing RADaR, you will need to edit your story. Use the sample below to help you with some formatting items. Tomorrow you will need the latest version of your narrative accessible on your iPad. Remember, the printed final draft of your story is due at the start of the hour on Friday.
Today we will begin with our next lesson of Unit 2. Take notes on the handout and attempt the practice sentences on your own.
Next we'll get back to our narrative work. You have two tasks today:
If you are not able to finish RADaR in class, this is homework for tomorrow. If you finish early, you may read your SSR book. Today we will begin with Status of the Class, SSR, and completing our book goal forms. This is the last week we'll track before completing our Quarterly Reflections. Sprint to the finish!
Next we'll watch a clip to give us some inspiration for our revising and editing work this week. Then I will model for you how we are going to tackle peer revisions using a sample narrative. Finally, you will get into groups and begin this process with your own writing. This task will carry over to tomorrow. Today we are going to shift around our usual order. We will START with time to draft our narratives. Remember, this can be hand-written or typed on your iPad. Either way, the completed first draft is due at the end of the hour today (please show me when it's finished). You will need a typed copy accessible on your iPad at the start of class on Monday.
When you finish your draft and are happy with how it reads, please read your SSR book for the remainder of the hour. Today we'll begin with a Unit 2, Lesson 1 of grammar--see our grammar page for notes details.
Then we will return our attention to our Narrative Anchor. Your first draft of your story is due at the start of the hour TOMORROW! This draft may be typed or hand-written (just make sure it is legible). We will be working through some revisions in class tomorrow, so your draft must be a complete story. If you finish early, please work toward your goal page in your SSR book. Today we will begin with 15 minutes of SSR and conferences. Then we will turn our attention back to the Narrative Writing Anchor. Over the course of the hour, I'll look over plans while you begin plotting your story in a story board. Once your storyboard is complete, you may begin drafting.
Note: If you have trouble getting started, look back at a few of our mentor texts for ideas! |
