Today we will discuss MLA documentation. We'll use this video to complete a section of our notes today. Then we'll begin working on our research project for the movie.
We'll start with 10 minutes of reading today. Remember, by Friday, I need to check your concept map full of research topics and a start to your annotations. This will be a graded assignment.

Today we'll begin by brainstorming research topics for our books. Then we'll read for 10 minutes.
Next we'll jump into the Evaluating Sources activity that I modeled for you yesterday. Work your way through the sources provided, filling in information in each of the squares when it is available to you. If an element doesn't exist (like author or sponsoring organization), leave it blank. Decide whether or not you should use each of the sources listed. If you finish with time left, you may continue reading/annotating your book. Today we will begin with our reading goals. First, I'll collect your Quarterly Reflections. Then, you'll read your selected book for ten minutes to determine your new reading rate. Finally, you'll set your goals for this week, keeping in mind that you'll need to have this book finished by Monday, February 26.
Next we'll take some time to brainstorm possible research topics for our books on our annotation pages. You'll annotate your book the same way we annotated the movie last week. When we finish our work with reading, we'll move on to discuss source credibility. Please have a charged iPad for class tomorrow! On Thursday, you'll begin by watching the film we started yesterday, annotating as you go like we practiced. With a few minutes to go at the end of the hour, you can pause the film and compare annotations with those around you. Remember, you don't have to have the same as everyone else, but you do need enough details to make our project work next week (try to fill at least 3/4 of the page by the end of the movie).
On Friday, you'll finish the movie and your annotations. Turn the annotations in please. Then you'll spend the rest of the hour working on your Quarterly Reading Reflection. Use the handout as your guide and write on a separate piece of lined paper. Follow the directions carefully! This will be entered as an assessment score. What you don't finish of the Quarterly Reflection is homework for Monday. If you finish early, you may use the time to read. Remember, you need a copy of your chosen book for this project on Monday! Welcome to the second semester of your first year of high school! We are going to begin by taking time to reflect on the first semester and set some goals to work toward this spring. After we settle into our new seats, we'll take 7-8 minutes to respond to the following prompt:
#10 Looking Back What are your thoughts on completing your first semester as a high school student? Is it different than you thought it would be? Why or why not? Academically speaking, what went well for you? What didn't? Looking back on it now, why do you think that is? Now that you have a little perspective, please end this entry by adding two more thoughts:
Next we will begin working on our mini-research project to kick off this next term. First, I'll explain the book requirements for this project. Then we'll spend some time brainstorming in small groups what kind of topics we might find in our books. If a title sounds interesting today, feel free to check it out! We will NOT have a reading goal this week, but you will need to have a NEW book to begin reading in class on Friday. We will spend some time exploring the library for options at the end of the hour today. Because I can't handle being so close to the end of a movie and not finishing it, we'll start the hour by watching the last scene of Percy Jackson. We'll also take a few minutes to compare his epic journey to Odysseus' story and the Hero's Journey archetype.
Then we'll spend the rest of the hour reviewing for the exam. We'll start by going over the 20 grammar questions in the practice exam packet. You'll also have time to begin reviewing terms from our short story unit (listed on your exam review page). Good luck on exams tomorrow! Get some rest and eat a good breakfast...you got this! Today we'll begin by going over our Unit 3 grammar test. I'll recollect these when we're done. Next, we'll finish watching Percy Jackson.
Tomorrow we will spend the hour preparing for our final exam. Please complete the practice grammar exam in preparation for our study session. Today we will take our Unit 3 grammar test. When you finish, you may take out your SSR book and continue working toward your weekly goal.
I will also hand out a review sheet for the first semester exam. Use this to begin studying. Today we will finish reviewing the practice test for tomorrow's Unit 3 test. Your homework tonight is to study! Once we finish, we'll continue watching our film.
Today we will once again begin with SSR. You should be reading to your goal page for Monday. Remember, this is the final week for this quarter.
Next we'll review for Friday's grammar test by going over the first two sections of the practice test. Once we finish, we will begin another "Hero's Journey" story--one that ties in well to The Odyssey. As we watch, please note any and all references you notice to Greek Mythology. |
