We will be using a modernized film version of Romeo and Juliet to discuss various elements of the play. Keep your notes! You will use these later in the unit.

Today we'll finish Act 2 together. Then we'll have some small group conversations about the play thus far:
Today we will begin with silent reading. Mark your starting page number on your calendar.
Then we will turn our attention back to the play. I will collect your figurative language handouts/illustrations. We'll also add some examples to our flash card folio terms. Finally, we will watch scene 4 on film and summarize for our chart. Today we'll begin with a little close reading practice. You will read Act 2, Scene 3 on your own and answer the following questions in bullet points on your summary chart:
When you are finished, you may move on to our next task--writing our own figurative language to modernize the cheesy scene in 2.2. Use the handout to guide you. Once you finish the handout, you'll complete one final task. Create a SMALL (notecard size) illustration of just ONE of the similes or metaphors you wrote. The illustration should show the literal interpretation of your words (for the example, I'd have to depict Juliet as a Tommy Turtle Sundae, or I could show Romeo in a long line at Captain Sundae). Make sure your simile or metaphor is also written on your picture. This is going to be a bit of a contest with some prizes, so bring your A game!!! Your illustration is due at the start of the hour tomorrow. If you finish early, you may read. We will start the hour with our silent reading. Please be sure to fill in your starting page number today.
As we shift our attention to Romeo and Juliet, I'll collect any remaining character assignments that are still out there from last week. Then we'll begin reading Act 2, Scene 2 together. Summarize in your notes as we go. When we finish, you'll have time to start the figurative language handout (finish for tomorrow). Today we'll begin with our Romeo and Juliet quiz over Act 1. When you finish, please turn it in to the wire bin. Then take out your lit. book and open to Act 2, Prologue and Scene 1. Using the handout provided to guide you, read this short scene and answer the 5 questions in the right column. Be sure to summarize the action on the Act 2 page of your packet too. You are doing this reading on your own to see how well you can understand it.
When you finish this work, please read your choice book for the rest of the hour. Don't forget to fill in your calendar with your starting page! Today we'll begin with some reading time. Record your starting page on your calendar.
Next we'll move on to a characterization assignment. Now that we are one act into the play, we are going to pause and reflect on the characters we've met so far. Once you are assigned a character, write his/her name in the center box of your handout. Then fill each of the remaining boxes with the items listed below:
Below is a list of items that may be on tomorrow's quiz:
We'll begin today with the final scene of Act 1. This is the scene in which Romeo and Juliet actually meet for the first time. After reading the scene together, we'll watch scenes 4 and 5 on film.
Remember, we will have a quiz over Act 1 (see yesterday's post for details) on Friday. With the time we have left, we'll do some silent reading. The first thing we will do today is read Act 1, Scene 4 (1.4) along with the audio. Pay extra close attention to the dynamic in this group of friends. How would their friends describe Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio individually?
**Please note that we'll be finishing Act 1 this week. On Friday you will have a quiz. Below is a list of items that may be on it:
Today we will start with the play. We'll read scenes 2 and 3 together (using a film version for scene 3). We will also fill in our charts with summaries and characters.
With the time we have left, we'll do some silent reading. Remember to fill in your calendar! |
