Next we'll move on to a characterization assignment. Now that we are one act into the play, we are going to pause and reflect on the characters we've met so far. Once you are assigned a character, write his/her name in the center box of your handout. Then fill each of the remaining boxes with the items listed below:

- an illustration that depicts your character in a scene that has taken place thus far--label any other characters involved and record the scene number.
- 3 words/phrases that accurately describe your character as we know him/her
- 1 significant quote from your character that helps us understand more about him/her--cite using the act, scene, and line number: "Then move not while my prayer's effect I take. Thus by your lips my sin is purged" (1.5.117-118).
- a 4-5 sentence journal entry written by your character about their day (the first day of the play), which highlights his/her feelings about something that happened.

- The prologue--what it is, what it says, and how it says it (poetic devices used in it)
- Action in Act 1--what happens between the characters in the first act of the play?
- Characters in Act 1--who is involved in the story and what side are they all on?
- Terms in Act 1--know the terms that we have discussed so far (see your folio notes for the ones with examples): MONOLOGUE, ALLUSION, PUN, OXYMORON, DRAMATIC IRONY, METAPHOR,
